Bike Tour Packing List (Self-Guided)

This is a hopefully exhaustive list that BTB has compiled.  It's been updated a bit to reflect the modern biker, but we welcome any feedback and additions.  We'll leave it to you to gear for number of days, preferred types of accommodations, level of addiction to technology, and how often you want to do laundry.

For the Ride

  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Bike gloves
  • Sunglasses
  • Bright front light/strobe (detachable is good to use as flashlights, check the batteries)
  • Rear flashing LED (check the batteries)
  • Lock (key type, not combination; not a simple cable)
  • 2 large water bottles (or Camelbak)
  • First aid (disinfectant, band aids, something for skin irritation like )
  • Bike box (if required for shipping)
  • GPS or maps
  • Bike computer
  • Chamois butter (Trust us on this one...) 

Repair and maintenance tools

  • Pump
  • 2 inner tubes
  • 1 foldable tire
  • 2 plastic tire levers
  • Spare Allen screws and washers for the rack
  • Patch kit 
  • Allen wrenches (4/5/6 mm; 7 mm for older and 8 mm for newer Campagnolo cranks)
  • 15 mm cone wrench
  • Chain tool
  • Spoke wrench
  • Cassette tool turnscrew cogs
  • Spare spokes, two each length
  • Spare brake and shift cables
  • Swiss army knife
  • Small duct or electrical tape (in case all else fails)
  • Cable ties
  • Chain lube

Luggage and personal

  • Sleeping bag (waterproof, inside flap over zippers, lightweight, as small as possible) with sleeping bag stuff sack, fill with clothes at night to use as a pillow
  • Sleeping pad (optional but recommended)

  • Tent (for those who are roughing it)
  • Hand-wash detergent
